Appropriations Committee Actions

The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights will have its Senate Appropriations Committee Hearing this Monday August 15th. The Appropriations Committee is responsible on analyzing the fiscal impact of our bill. Our bill was placed in suspense during the Assembly Appropriations Committee Hearing.

We NEED to show the Senators that supporting AB889 the Domestic Workers Bill or Rights is a step forward in supporting shared economic prosperity and growth. Improving this workforce means millions of Californians will be able to go to work and contribute to the economy. The standards proposed in this bill will help keep the industry above ground by creating uniform rules

People who can afford to have domestic workers help them keep their houses clean and take care of their children must certainly have the means, and should have the humanity to give these helpers a fair wage and the rights to which workers in other industries are entitled.

thank you for this, the 24 hour shifts with only 5 hours of sleep covered by the agency, were exhausting for a friend of mine employed as a caregiver through an agency and they paid $130 to the caregiver, told the client hiring that as long as the caregiver was allowed 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep the client would pay the 24 hour rate (I don’t know what the agency charged for the 24 hour shift but $130 paid to the caregivr divided by 19 hours is not minimum wage….besides which with 2 to 5 day 24 hour shifts the sleep deprivation could cause serious errors when working with elderly clients.

He had another part time job so could refuse the 24 hour shifts for the most part but not all caregivers can afford to refuse shifts.

I am so excite there is a campaign like this. Quick question: how does it play out for undocumented workers? Will the bill cover them too?

    • admin says:

      Musa,
We are very excited too! Thank you for your support! Under California wage orders for workers there is no distinction between documented and undocumented workers, meaning that California labor laws apply regardless of immigration status. Since we are not changing California labor laws but rather bringing this industry in compliance with the law domestic workers regardless of immigration status would be covered. Hope this answers your question.

Hello! I think all workers deserve overtime and good pay but am concerned about the bad press this bill has been getting recently pushed by Sen. LaMalfa, right wing blogs and parenting websites. There have been many articles claiming that couples hiring a one time babysitter would be burdened and fined. I don’t see any mention of that here and don’t believe it is true. What can be done to counter these claims and help support your efforts? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • admin says:

We agree! I think that the people putting forward the stories and the messages are misrepresenting our bill and the intent of our Bill. I think that right now we need to keep reminding people that the intent of this bill is bring equal labor protections to an industry that lacks it. We continue to ask our supporters to leave comments in those articles and hold the media outlets accountable. Thank you for all your support on this campaign Gael! Together we will win!
